The To-Do List Can Wait

The emails could’ve been answered. The laundry could’ve been folded. The grass definitely still needs cutting (don’t judge). But today, I chose to play.

Because let’s be honest—tomorrow isn’t promised. Tomorrow is not guaranteed. And I don’t want to keep waiting for the perfect moment to slow down with my Little Lass. So I didn’t worry about the muddy footprints, my frizzy hair, or the jobs waiting indoors.

It was a hot day and unusual for us Brits, I had a thought: if it was sunny and I was 8 years old, what would I love to be doing? Two words: Water Fight.

So, before the school run, I blew up the paddling pool and partly filled it with water. I laid out her favourite swimming cozzie and a towel on the rattan settee ready for when I brought her home from school.

You should’ve seen her little face when she saw my surprise. She was giggling. Completely carefree. Eyes shining as I chased her around the garden. And for those few messy, magic minutes—I was all in. And I loved it too. I wasn’t caught up on the clothes on the washing line and whether they’d get wet. I wasn’t worried about my hair getting wet or the mental checklist of household chores.

What if the right moment is right now?

Life’s relentless sometimes, isn’t it? Work deadlines, meetings, school runs, tea to sort, a house to run. We wait for weekends or holidays to finally relax… but what if the right moment is after school on a random weeknight? In the middle of the mess. Just at home. Nothing fancy.

I’ve started intentionally giving her 30 minutes a day—no devices, no distractions. Just the two of us, doing whatever she fancies. Baking, colouring, dressing up, dancing like loons in the living room. It’s her choice, and I’m just there for the ride – just to be with her.

And honestly? It’s been a game-changer.

Not just for her—but for me too. I find joy more easily when I switch off and follow her lead. When I stop trying to do it all and just meet her in her little world – that’s where the magic is. It’s like time slows down, even for a little bit.

When I stop trying to ‘do-it-all’, I meet her in her little world

I want her to remember that mummy wasn’t too busy. That even when life was full-on, I was present. That she mattered more than the chores or the phone calls.

So yeah, the house is a tip. The inbox is full. But today, I chose to play.

And I wouldn’t change a thing. 🤍
