Mother’s Day

Last Mother’s Day, we spent a sunny Sunday together at the seaside. Our group day out was a walk on an east coast beach, dinner of fish & chips and some quality family time. Fast forward to this year and life is so different … the Coronavirus pandemic means no group day out. No group dinner plans. And, the imposed social distancing means that most of us won’t be spending time with our beloved Mums. Instead, many of us will be leaving presents on our Mothers’ doorsteps and looking at their beautiful faces on a screen because we are staying away to protect our loved ones. Just like the countless times our Mums have protected us over the years. And it’s the right thing to do.

While our habits and plans have might have changed, our love and gratitude for our Mums hasn’t. If anything, it’s even stronger today – we’re being reminded of the fragile nature of life.

Every year, I think that the gifts I buy are never enough to show my deepest appreciation of the strongest woman I know. A woman who always seems to laugh at life even in the toughest times. A woman of resilience and unassuming bravery.

So, it doesn’t matter what gift you give. Because this year, we will all be celebrating by simply wishing our Mums an abundance of good health & happiness and we’ll simply look forward to the time when we can have a proper face to face chat.

It’s also the first Mother’s Day without our Nannan Pat (my mum’s mum) and I know it will be difficult day for our family – but we have each other to lean on.

I know that there will be an outpouring of love for Mums across the nation. I can’t wait to hear stories of love in this challenging time. I wish we could bottle up the love and keep it. Lord knows we need some right now in this time of uncertainty. So here’s to all the Mums, step-mums, soon to be mums, should-be mums and those without their mums. Enjoy and treasure those video calls or your conversations at a distance because there’s no better time to enjoy the little moments.

In the meantime, I’ll be spending my Mother’s Day at home with my three year old little lass and be hoping that her Daddy arranges some sort of breakfast in bed… or dare I say, a lie in? Here’s hoping…

Mama Jules – I love you x
